16 Mar PRODUCT TECHNICAL DATASHEET: The Essentials

Put simply, a product datasheet (PDS) is used for technical communication to describe technical characteristics of an item or product (e.g. junction box).

The PDS serves as a digital passport for a manufacturer’s product, usually consisting of all things anyone needs to know about a product in the form of data – i.e. cleaned, accurate and ready for automation. Although, depending on the specific purpose to be achieved a PDS may provide a typical value, an average value, typical range, engineering tolerances, or a nominal value.

A PDS is expected to convey information to a user in the most accurate description possible.

Characteristics of a PDS

  • It should relay information which summarizes the performance and other technical characteristics of each product, material or component according to specific regulatory, market or client-specific requirements that have been incorporated in the mechanism of the products during process of manufacturing. Information such as;
    • the manufacturer’s name,
    • product name,
    • product number,
    • product description and specification,
    • notable product properties etc.
  • As a digital footprint for each product, the PDS must be traceable to the manufacturer containing specific details with reference to particular codes assigned to each product produced by a manufacturer.
  • It is optional to enter a data range for the PDS that will cover the whole family of products with otherwise similar characteristics or differences such as color, size, etc.
  • Some PDS may be accompanied by a safety document otherwise referred to as Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

The entire supply chain stands to benefit largely from the use of a PDS delivered from a credible source which is most accurate, and contains up-to-date manufacturer’s data.
